Here at ScreenTies, as we celebrate our three-month anniversary, we've been reflecting on where we are and where we want to go. Along with some cool new features that we've got in the works, we're especially interested in broadening our scene selection even further, so that we're truly offering something for everyone. One genre that's gone almost completely unrepresented on the site to date is the classic American movie serial. So this week, we're taking our first big step toward fixing that, with a complete collection of DiD scenes from the 1941 Republic Pictures serial Jungle Girl.
Lest we forget: between 1910 and 1956, the five major U.S. film studios (plus dozens of minor ones) released over 500 multipart serials to theatres. Even a quick glance at Brian's database—just enter "serial" in the "Medium" field—will confirm that some of those serials contain DiD scenes that are classics in every sense of the word.
Jungle Girl is a perfect example, with six DiD sequences across 15 chapters, featuring Frances Gifford as a beautiful, resourceful heroine in a sexy outfit, coping with some fairly creative perils. If there's one drawback here, it's that only one of those six sequences includes a gag. But other titles include significantly more, and we'll do our best to bring them to you in the coming months. Got a favorite serial? Let us know in the comments or via our contact form!
P.S. In case you were wondering, we're currently handling movie serials as TV series (with a single season) since they're so similar in nature. However, we've also added a new "serial" tag which subscribers can use to find future scenes in this category in no time flat. Have fun!
