Welcome to the latest installment of our efforts to highlight recent TV series which have been especially generous to DiD fans! Today we're looking at the Mexican action series La Negociadora (The Negotiator), whose first twelve-episode season was released in full on the Claro Video streaming service in December 2020. (Minor spoilers to follow!)
The season gets off to a roaring start with arguably its most impressive DiD scene, when the title character played by Bárbara Mori confronts a criminal gang who have taken hostages and are threatening to blow them up.
Happily for us, by far the most visible of those hostages are played by Azul Guaita Bracamontes and Mariel Molino, who spend most of the episode cleave gagged and tied to chairs. The dramatic sequence includes a good variety of shots, excellent lighting (with a little help from the police helicopters circling outside), and a solid twist before it's resolved.
Later in the season, Fiona Palomo's character learns too much and finds herself swiftly wrap-gagged with duct tape and stashed in a closet. Her peril only becomes more intense a few episodes later, when she's untied but also outfitted with Gag 2.0, which includes a grenade that's rigged to explode if anyone (including her) tries anything funny. Ouch.
In the season finale, Ms. Mori herself is bound and gagged in the back of an SUV. It's not a long scene, and the lighting could certainly be better, but...gotta hold something back for season two, right?
To check out the full season, simply head to JustWatch and select your country to see streaming options. (In the U.S., Pantaya offers a free trial and is available as a Prime Video channel.) One important caveat: to the best of our knowledge, this series is not yet officially available with subtitles (or dubbing), so it will definitely help if your Spanish is a lot stronger than ours.
