Has anyone actually figured out how and why the nation of Turkey decided to become the 900-pound gorilla of the mainstream damsel-in-distress scene? Because it can't be denied that they've been crushing it for years. We currently feature over 150 Turkish scenes on ScreenTies, though frankly, that's an underrepresentation that we're looking forward to addressing in the coming months.
If you're still not convinced, the Rube Goldberg-esque peril that the gangland drama Çukur (aka The Pit) got up to at the very end of 2020 is a stellar example of what we're talking about.
It all started modestly enough on December 14, with the show's second tape gag scene for Miss Universe Turkey 2017 herself, Dilan Çiçek Deniz. Perfectly solid stuff, and we're including that scene from the episode "Aileme Dokunma" to set the mood, but we had no idea what was about to hit us.
In the very next episode, Nehir (Hazal Subasi, whose DiD resumé was already formidable) and Efsun (Damla Sönmez, in her DiD debut as far as we know) are accosted at knifepoint. When we next see Nehir, she's been zip-tied at her wrists and bare feet to a metal chair and heavily wrap-gagged with packing tape, with a pool of lethally electrified water drawing closer by the minute.
That's some peril we can get behind, but what of the lovely Efsun? Well, she's been gagged with tape and tied down on a table with her arms and legs spread wide. That wouldn't be such a big deal, except that there's a pair of buzzing chainsaws mounted on a metal frame just above her—and the more water drips out of the drum at the other end of those cables, the closer they get.
This goes on for quite some time, across two episodes, before the happy ending. We're pretty sure it's the most inspired DiD set piece to come out of the Land of the Crescent Moon since Sana Bir Sir Verecegim did this way back in 2013.
